When January 1st rolls around, it’s time to look back at the year past and look ahead to what the new year holds. As you dig into some self-reflection, you might be wondering: what does my 2019 look like? If you’re struggling to set some goals for yourself for the coming year, here are a few New Year’s resolutions for a happy and healthy 2019 (and some tips for how to keep them):
This one is a classic. Ringing in the New Year is the perfect time to get into a new fitness regime. Take time in 2019 to set new fitness goals and take the steps to reach them. Whether your focus is losing weight, getting stronger, or just being more active, start the year off right and get going
HOW TO KEEP THIS RESOLUTION: Lucky for you, the uOttawa fitness facilities and Gee-Gee’s Rec are here to help. We offer programs and classes to help you stay active and healthy. From cycling to Pilates and everything in between, check out the Gee-Gee’s rec website to see how we can help you reach your fitness goals.
Learn a new skill
Another great resolution to set is to try to learn something new in 2019. Setting the goal to learn something promotes personal growth and brings a new and exciting challenge to your year. Invest in yourself to find something that you enjoy.
HOW TO KEEP THIS RESOLUTION: Try out a dance class! We offer seven different beginner classes taught by experienced, professional dancers from ballet to hip-hop. For an added bonus, dance is a great total-body workout!
Meet new people
The New Year is a great time to put yourself out there and bring some new people into your life. Especially when school is getting the best of us, or when we’re tempted to hibernate for the winter, it’s always good to get out there and have a good time with friends. Don’t say no to opportunities to add some new and interesting people to your friend group.
HOW TO KEEP THIS RESOLUTION: Putting yourself out there in engaging and low-stress environments is an easy way to make a friend. Try joining an intramural league! With tons of different sports and skill levels, bond with some new teammates over the game. You can find a team, or join as an individual, but don’t wait long! Registration opens January 3rd.
Be an adventurer
Maybe 2019 is the year you get a little more adventurous. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut, but the new year is perfect to shake up your life and add some excitement. Take a road trip, try new foods, or just switch up your coffee order. This can be the year you say YES to new and exciting activities to become a better you.
HOW TO KEEP THIS RESOLUTION: If you can’t hop on a plane and fly to an exotic destination, try exploring your own backyard! Try a new activity and cross-country ski through the beautiful Gatineau Park (the bonus hot cocoa and fondue helps too). Register for our day trip on the Gee-Gee’s rec website.
Improve your mental wellness
Just as important as your physical health is your mental health, and a happy and healthy new year should start with getting your mind right. 2019 is the time to focus on total mind and body wellness. Focus on de-stressing, having a positive attitude, and taking care of your whole self. When your mind and your body are on the same healthy track, it’s easy to conquer all of your new year’s goals.
HOW TO KEEP THIS RESOLUTION: Take part in practices and activities that align your body and mind to improve your all-around health and happiness. At uOttawa we offer classes like Martial Arts and Yoga, that focus on zen mediation and mental strength, all while giving you a great workout.
